>> The Kalamazoo Wings opened up their first three-game weekend of the season with the first of two games against the Fort Wayne Komets. The visiting Komets jumped out to an early lead 2:53 into the game and added a power play goal to go up 2-0 after 20 minutes. Dylan Sadowy provided a spark with a wraparound goal 48 seconds into the middle frame, but the Komets answered with three more goals before the end of the period, including their second goal on the man-advantage. Kalamazoo picked up a sliver of hope when Matt Iacopelli set up Luke Sandler for a tap-in 7:32 into the third period, but Fort Wayne added an empty netter to seal their 6-2 road win.

>> The K-Wings put together a much better start Saturday on Military Appreciation Night at Wings Event Center, when Brennan Sanford scored the team’s second short-handed goal of the season. Fort Wayne tied the game on a five-minute power play late in the opening period, which carried over into the second. The Komets struck again on that same power play to take the lead. Dylan Sadowy deflected a centering pass into the net to even the score at 2-2, but Fort Wayne answered 17 seconds later. Justin Kovacs then tied the score at 3-3 with 5:17 left in the middle stanza, but the Komets scored their third of four power play goals (on nine opportunities) and led 4-3 after two. Sadowy lit the lamp a second time 3:34 into the third and then set up Boston Leier for the go-ahead goal 2:31 later. But Fort Wayne scored another power play goal with 6:55 remaining to force overtime and won the game with 1:49 left in the extra frame.

Sunday, Nov. 10 – Cincinnati 3, Kalamazoo 2  (Wings Event Center – Kalamazoo, MI) | Box Score

>> Finishing off a busy weekend at home, Kalamazoo welcomed Cincinnati Sunday and fell into another 2-0 first period hole. Dylan Sadowy, who had seven points on the weekend (4g, 3a), started the comeback with a power play goal 4:22 into the second period. Boston Leier followed a successful penalty kill with a hard-nosed goal while he was getting hauled down on his way to the net. Cincinnati went back in front 2:48 later with their second power play goal of the afternoon. The Cyclones wound up with 10 opportunities on the man-advantage. Trailing 3-2 entering the third, Kalamazoo mustered up six shots in the final period, but could not find the game-tying goal, as the Cyclones held on for the 3-2 victory.

The Kalamazoo Wings return home Saturday, Nov. 16 to face the Utah Grizzlies for the only time this season at 7:00 p.m at Wings Event Center. >> The Kalamazoo Wings won their second straight division game on home ice Wednesday, defeating the Fort Wayne Komets in a high-scoring affair 6-4 at Wings Event Center. Forward Dylan Sadowy continued where he left off in the home opener with his second straight two-goal game, while Tanner Sorenson also scored twice and added an assist. The third member of that line, Kyle Blaney, made his 2019-20 debut with three assists. Luke Sandler broke a 2-2 tie in the second period, giving Kalamazoo the lead for good, and Justin Taylor scored on the night he broke the K-Wings’ franchise record for games played (496).

>> The K-Wings celebrated Halloween early with their annual Orange Ice game and overcame a spooky 2-0 hole and a 3-2 third period deficit to defeat the Tulsa Oilers 4-3 in overtime. Tanner Sorenson sparked the comeback with Kalamazoo’s first short-handed goal of the season at 11:27 of the second period, and Boston Leier tied the game late in the middle frame with his third goal of the year. Trailing late in regulation, Dylan Sadowy saw his point shot deflect off an Oilers skate and into the net to tie the game with 4:57 to play. Late in the new seven minute overtime, Justin Taylor provided the heroics on the night he was honored for his aforementioned record.

TUESDAY, OCT. 29 – EDUCATION DAY GAME

The Kalamazoo Wings and Toledo Walleye meet up for the first time this season in a battle of two 3-1 teams. Tuesday’s game is extra special because it’s bright and early, starting at 10:30 a.m. at Wings Event Center for Kalamazoo’s annual Education Day Game. Thousands of local school kids will be able to take in a hockey game with their classmates while learning a thing or two in the process during the intermissions.

SATURDAY, NOV. 2 – STAR WARS NIGHT/GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS ATTEMPT

The K-Wings will try to make history Saturday night at Wings Event Center when everyone in attendance will participate in a mock lightsaber battle to attempt a Guinness World Records title on Star Wars Night, as Kalamazoo hosts Wheeling at 7:00 p.m. Thousands of K-Wings lightsabers will be given away to those attending the game, and the record attempt will take place promptly at the end of the first period.

Kalamazoo reveals its final roster heading into its 46^th season, which starts Saturday in Fort Wayne.

Teams are allowed to carry 23 players on their active roster for the first month of the season, not including players listed on injured reserve. Kalamazoo placed defenseman Eric Kattelus on injured reserve to start the season, as well as forwards Kyle Blaney and Zach Saar.

 

Kalamazoo also acquired defenseman Connor Schmidt from the Toledo Walleye for future considerations late Wednesday, after the above list was submitted to the ECHL.

 

The K-Wings open the season Saturday in Fort Wayne with a 7:35 p.m. face-off against the Komets at Memorial Coliseum. Fans can listen to the game on AM 1660 The Fan in Kalamazoo or watch online on ECHL TV. The team will also be hosting an official Watch Party out at Old Burdick’s at Wings West, starting at 7:00 p.m., featuring prize giveaways as well as food and drink specials.

Kalamazoo officially opens camp Tuesday with 30 players, including the return of veteran forward Yannick Veilleux.

Several players on Kalamazoo’s training camp roster recently took part in the Utica Comets AHL camp, including goaltender Jake Kielly, defensemen Ian Edmondson and Aaron Thow, and forwards Matt Iacopelli, Dylan Sadowy, and Tanner Sorenson.

 

Additionally, forward Boston Leier is currently in Utica’s AHL camp on a professional tryout. Leier signed a standard player contract with Kalamazoo this summer.

The K-Wings revealed the full training camp schedule Monday. All practices are at Wings Event Center and open to the public during camp. Kalamazoo will host the Toledo Walleye on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. in an exhibition game, with tickets available for just $5. KALAMAZOO, MI – The Kalamazoo Wings, proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks, announced Tuesday the signing of two former Western Michigan University forwards, Justin Kovacs and Matt Iacopelli to the 2019-20 roster.

Kovacs, 27, returns to Kalamazoo where he started his pro career in 2015-16. The Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. native appeared in eight games for the K-Wings at the end of his senior season at WMU. He also spent his first full professional season in Kalamazoo, where he posted 29 points (6g, 23a) in 63 games.

“My family and I are very happy to be back in Kalamazoo,” said Kovacs. “It’s a great organization surrounded with great people, and it was an easy decision. I can’t wait to get back on the ice with some of the guys I have played with before, and I hope to help the K-Wings have a strong year and make a run in the playoffs.”

The 5-foot-11, 194-pound forward spent parts of two ECHL seasons with the Quad City Mallards, before heading overseas. Kovacs finished the 2017-18 campaign with HK Nitra in Slovakia, and spent the entire 2018-19 season with the Nottingham Panthers of the Elite Ice Hockey League, where he put up 43 points (13g, 30a) in 53 games.

“Justin has played for us before and understands the commitment we ask of our players,” said K-Wings Head Coach Nick Bootland. “He is a highly-skilled forward who makes a team’s power play better.”

Iacopelli, 25, joins the K-Wings for his third season as a pro, after splitting the 2018-19 campaign between the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs, and ECHL’s Indy Fuel and Manchester Monarchs. The Chicago Blackhawks drafted the Woodhaven, Mich. native in the third round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and signed him to his first pro contract in 2016-17 after his sophomore seasons at WMU.

“I’m excited to be back on the west side of the state,” said Iacopelli. “I already know what the city has to offer, having played two years here at Western Michigan, and I’m really ready to contribute to and represent the K-Wings this season.”

The 6-foot-3, 207-pound winger comes to Kalamazoo with 116 games of pro experience. He had 27 points (14g, 13a) in 85 games with Rockford and 19 points (15g, 4a) in 31 ECHL games.

“Matt is a huge pickup for us,” said Bootland. “He is a powerful skater with a great shot, and we love that he is still driven and hungry to move up and play at the highest level.

Both players enjoyed success at the collegiate level for the Broncos. Kovacs recorded 76 points (23g, 53a) in 129 games over four seasons at WMU, helping the Broncos to the CCHA Conference Championship in 2011-12 as a freshman. Iacopelli compiled 43 points (21g, 22a) in 67 college games over two seasons, including a very productive sophomore season in 2016-17, where he posted 36 points (20g, 16a) in 40 games.
